Course description
The Spanish for travellers course is designed for people planning a trip to a Spanish-speaking country who need to master the essentials of the language quickly and practically. The programme uses a dynamic, communicative approach that allows students to handle any typical everyday travel situation naturally.
The content is organised to strengthen speaking and listening skills, covering real situations from arrival at the destination to handling everyday unexpected events. The methodology combines guided practice with simulations of common tourism scenarios, maximising travellers’ independence in a short time.
This course is particularly suitable for tourists, professionals travelling for work or anyone seeking useful language tools they can apply immediately during their trip.
The course programme is set out below, including objectives, content, assessment and materials.
Programme adaptation: The objectives and content are adapted to the destination, the type of trip and the situations the student needs to handle, such as accommodation, transport and everyday interactions.
Entry requirements
To take this course, students must provide evidence that they have successfully completed level A2.
An initial assessment allows the pace and focus to be adapted to the student’s prior knowledge and travel needs.
Grouping: private classes or groups of 2 to 6 students, with a programme adapted to their objectives.
Objectives
- General objective: Provide students with the essential linguistic and sociocultural tools to handle everyday communication situations independently, effectively and confidently while travelling in a Spanish-speaking country.
- Specific learning objectives:
- Enable students to manage practical travel arrangements, such as accommodation, transport, shopping and medical or emergency assistance.
- Encourage basic social interaction and resolution of common problems abroad through functional phrases and specific vocabulary used in real life.
Content
- The content programme and sequence are structured according to the inventories of the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum Plan (PCIC), organised around five key areas applied to travel:
- Grammar content: Formal and functional study of essential morphosyntactic structures for handling travel situations with ease, such as past tenses for recounting experiences, the present for everyday interaction and periphrases of necessity or obligation.
- Pragmatic-discursive content: Politeness formulas and specific communicative intentions for asking favours, requesting information, politely declining proposals, making complaints and managing turn-taking in quick transactions.
- Notional and functional content: Spatial and temporal concepts, semantic fields and vocabulary for real interactions in airports, hotels, restaurants, transport, shops and health centres.
- Referential and sociocultural content: Knowledge, behavioural conventions, food customs, cultural references and sociolinguistic norms specific to destinations in the Spanish-speaking world.
- Learning procedures: Practical strategies and resources aimed at enhancing travellers’ independence, deducing meaning from context and using support tools while travelling.
Assessment
- Diagnostic assessment (initial): A brief survey or placement test to check the student’s prior knowledge and adapt the pace and focus of classes to their specific travel needs.
- Formative and continuous assessment: Active monitoring of student progress through classroom simulations of real situations, practical task completion and personalised feedback from the teacher.
- Summative assessment and certification: Verification of mastery of the practical skills covered at the end of the course. To obtain the certificate of achievement, a minimum attendance of 80 % and active participation in classroom activities are essential requirements.
The certificate identifies the specific course taken, its teaching hours and achievement. Passing this course does not in itself amount to completing a general CEFR level.
Course certificates are issued by Hablo itself. The progress tests and assessments required to obtain them are internal and created by the teaching team; they are not official DELE or SIELE certification exams.
Materials
- Teaching and technology resources: Materials developed specifically for the course, quick language survival guides and interactive digital resources integrated into classrooms to simulate real scenarios (station announcements, digital menus, interactive maps).
- Reference textbooks: School workbooks and practical packs designed specifically for tourism and travel, available for students to purchase affordably.
