Course description
This course is aimed at students who will be studying at Spanish-speaking universities or who need academic Spanish for classes, assignments and student life. Students will develop their understanding of academic texts, essay writing, reports, summaries and presentations, and their ability to manage everyday university life (formal emails, enrolment, etc.).
Programme adaptation: The objectives and content are adapted to the student’s field of study and academic needs, such as understanding texts, writing assignments and giving oral presentations.
Entry requirements
To take this course, students must provide evidence that they have successfully completed level A2. The initial assessment helps guide placement and adapt the programme to their needs.
Grouping: private classes or groups of 2 to 6 students, with a programme adapted to their objectives.
Objectives
- General objective: Develop students’ academic linguistic and pragmatic competence, providing the tools and skills needed to study successfully at Spanish-speaking universities and function confidently in higher education.
- Specific learning objectives:
- Enable students to understand, analyse and synthesise complex academic texts from different disciplines.
- Provide students with advanced techniques for writing academic genres (essays, reports, summaries and research papers) and orally presenting projects or formal presentations.
- Facilitate independent management of everyday university life (interaction with teaching staff and fellow students, administrative procedures, formal email writing and participation in seminars).
Content
- The content programme and sequence are structured according to the inventories of the Instituto Cervantes Curriculum Plan (PCIC), focused on the academic setting:
- Grammar and functional content: Consolidation of complex morphosyntactic structures for argumentation, hypotheses, drawing conclusions, making discourse objective and citing sources.
- Lexical and notional content: Formal and academic vocabulary, cross-disciplinary higher education terminology and semantic fields specific to the student’s areas of study.
- Pragmatic-discursive and sociocultural content: Text organisation strategies (academic text superstructures), advanced cohesive devices, academic politeness conventions and sociolinguistic norms in Spanish-speaking university settings.
- Learning procedures: Study strategies, note-taking techniques, bibliographic research and independent management of academic learning.
Assessment
- Diagnostic assessment (initial): A compulsory placement test (in person or online) and assessment of prior academic skills to determine the student’s entry profile.
- Formative and continuous assessment: Regular progress monitoring through the submission and review of simulated academic assignments, supervised oral presentations, detailed feedback and academic tutorials focused on university performance.
- Summative assessment and certification: Achievement of objectives is assessed at the end of the course. To obtain the certificate of achievement and level, attendance at a minimum of 80 % of classes and compliance with the centre’s rules of behaviour are essential requirements.
The certificate identifies the specific course taken, its teaching hours and achievement. Passing this course does not in itself amount to completing a general CEFR level.
Course certificates are issued by Hablo itself. The progress tests and assessments required to obtain them are internal and created by the teaching team; they are not official DELE or SIELE certification exams.
Materials
- Teaching and technology resources: In-house materials based on university textbooks, scientific articles and authentic academic documents, as well as interactive digital resources integrated into classrooms (screens/televisions and live platforms via Google Meet compatible with the centre’s quality standards).
- Reference textbooks: A selection of publications on academic Spanish and preparation for university settings aligned with advanced CEFR levels and the PCIC, purchased separately by the student and available to buy directly at the school’s premises.
